Mashaba responds to news reports of Public Protector’s investigation

JOBURG – The probe is investigating allegations of irregular appointments of the head of the City of Johannesburg's anti-corruption unit, General Shadrack Sibiya, and Metro Police chief David Tembe.

According to News24, the office of the Public Protector is investigating Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba after they received complaints laid by the ANC and SACP in Johannesburg.

The ANC and SACP have reportedly claimed that there have been irregular appointments including that of the head of the City of Johannesburg’s anti-corruption unit, General Shadrack Sibiya, and Johannesburg Metro Police Department chief David Tembe.

Public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s spokesperson, Oupa Segalwe, said witnesses were being interviewed as part of the probe. One of the reported claims is that Sibiya was appointed without due process being followed.

In addition to this, the investigation is also focusing on the alleged conflict of interests.

In March 2018, Mashaba referred himself to an ethics committee after allegations surfaced that he used his wife’s company to assist with services regarding the insourcing of security guards for the city.

Mashaba responded to the media reports on his Twitter account, claiming that the probe is not new news, he wrote, “The matter is now being covered as if it is new news, ” adding that “Nothing new raised in these matters in the last 18 months or so.”
