Spectacle on 8th Avenue

ALEXANDRA – 'Dead' man forces traffic around his body.

A man lay ‘dead’ on an unusually hot tarred road in winter on 8th Avenue, Alex, as shocked motorists veered around him and pedestrians watched.

Small groups gathered on the sides of the road, some bemused while others gave a glimpse and continued on their errands. After moments of making a spectacle of himself , he rolled around, gesticulated with a crutch and rose from the dead as the shock in some of the spectators dissipated. Calling himself ANC, he ranted menacingly to anyone keen to listen, accusing the ANC party for letting him down.

“They used me during the apartheid era and have failed to pay me,” he barked without elaborating as this reporter tried to make sense from him.

Some around whispered that he usually concocted scenes and occasional antics for attention. The show ended soon after and the small crowd melted away and normalcy returned to the street.

It left one wondering how his risky conduct could have ended had he dared faster, rougher and road-rage driven motorists on a busier road. The public could have been denied knowledge of his message to the under fire ANC.
