Dig deep to get what is yours, young women told
ALEXANDRA – Plans and faith are paths to women's success.
Young, aspiring and professional women from Alexandra were exposed to challenges stacked against them in their professional career pursuits.
“Despite the many years of experience, impediments will always be placed in your path,” human resource expert Basetsana Magano of Phetogo Consulting said at a dialogue by newly formed empowerment initiative, Women Diaries.

She addressed 50 young and aspiring female professionals from Alexandra who had gathered at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton for the inauguration of the annual platform created by media award-winning Boitumelo Mmakou. Magano urged them not to despair as like those before them, her included, they were on a path of transformation. “It’s all a journey and process required to improve your lives unlike change which is an event with an end.

“You should always be present and alert in this journey which is full of and fraught with challenges. Be sharp when grappling for opportunities you deserve and take control and turn around barriers staked against you.”
Magano exposed them to challenges she still faces as a woman, 30 years into her career in executive positions and consulting business.
She urged women in general to help each other to ‘push back’ against the exclusion by understanding the man-made barriers targeting them in the corporate world. Women should always have and rely on plans in order to beat the usual refrain, ‘We told you so’ expressed when women fail due to the barriers.
The plans she said, will empower and help them take control, and enhance their determination to brands which:
- Know their skills set
- Find out by exploring what is out there
- Make decisions by comparing options
- Take action by working towards set goals
- Learn from each other’s experiences.
Gospel artist and marketing expert Motsidisi Mosekare advised the participants on the virtues of spiritual wellness. “Women generally lack confidence and want affirmation to feel good in their own bodies and to say ‘no’ or ‘yes’ on issues impacting them.”

Mosekare urged them to seek spiritual strength which will enhance their faith and confidence that they and their careers are no mistakes. “Faithfulness to the higher power will also bring calmness in you, make you not to be judgmental and encourage you to achieve excellence in whatever you do.”
She urged them to also support girls from a young age. “We are no islands and should extend the help we also received to the others before they succumb to the shame and pity associated with their background.
She further encouraged them to base their intimate relationships on a spiritual foundation saying this will provide clarity to their partnerships and contentment which would run on to their professional lives.
