Man causes fire at hostel
ALEXANDRA – A MAN started a fire at a hostel after he had a fight with his girlfriend.
A man who was fighting with his girlfriend caused a fire at the Madala Hostel in 4th Avenue and Alfred Nzo.
The fire which started in the man’s room at around 11pm on 1 October soon spread out on the fifth floor of the hostel and could not be contained. Emergency services were called to the scene to put out the fire.
Chairperson of the hostel committee, Thulani Maphumulo said that they were sleeping when the fire started. “We heard a commotion in the building and most of us woke up” he said.
According to Ward 75 councillor, Chris Mabunda, there are about 150 people who have no place to sleep. He said “we are not exactly sure of the number of people who will be affected by this tragedy as some of them are at work.” Mabunda said that one person was killed by the fire.
