Amazing grace from Investec

ALEXANDRA – Investec does its bit for Alex's abused children.

A project by Investec Bank lived up to its name, Amazing Grace, when the institution’s staff volunteers donated 45 comfort bags to needy children in Alexandra.

The donation was to NPO Victim Empowerment Unit at the Alexandra Police Station which works with children who are victims of abuse and witnesses of endemic violence in the township from an early age. This impacts their lives leaving them scarred, with some emulating this kind of conduct into adulthood if not provided appropriate psychosocial interventions.

Unit head Elizabeth Mokwena said of the four-year-old initiative, “The children struggle without this sort of support which helps them as some don’t have the basics for their physical health. Others are brought in to report abuse cases without pants and underwear.”

Forty-five packs in pink for girls and white for boys were donated – it contained shampoo, toothbrush and toothpaste, sanitary pads (for the girls), roll-on, petroleum jelly, pants and underwear, teddy bears, sweets and chips. Teenage girls also received cosmetic bags with cream, lipstick and scalp wash.
