Injured armed robber sentenced
ALEXANDRA – Robber hauled from hospital, sentenced
A man who was wounded while attempting an armed robbery and hijacking was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
His accomplice was shot dead during the incident.
The accused Donovan Baburi was traced to and arrested at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where he was being treated under an alias for a gunshot wound to his hand.
The victim, a motorist, had observed the pair looking at him as he parked his motor vehicle next to SanKopano Community Centre. Before he could exit his vehicle, the two approached him with the accused brandishing a gun and demanded the victim’s cell phone and money. The victim fired four shots from his gun hitting the accomplice who died on the spot.
The accused was hit in the hand and fled. As he was fleeing, he dropped the firearm which was found to be a toy gun.
He was found days later at the hospital.
