Councillor outlines pros of social media
ALEXANDRA – Be part of the benefits of social media movement.
The Alexandra Police Station and older residents were urged to join the social media movement in order to reap from its benefits.
Ward 116 councillor Adolph Marema spoke about the role social media played in the recent bust and prosecution of a man identified through the medium for cyberbullying and the finding of a 14-year-old girl who disappeared for two weeks.
Marema said, “The police should to jerk up their skills and integrate social media in their systems and older residents should upgrade their skills on it and be part of the new era.”
He added that this will enhance the police’s role in protecting society and help to keep them relevant and updated with current trends of a mostly youthful and IT-savvy society. He urged the police to use the platform to educate society on, among others, how and when to report missing persons to curb the delay in finding them.
He advised parents to use social media to keep abreast of their children’s lives, in addition to keeping tabs on their movements, company and schoolwork to ensure they attend school. He explained that some claim to be hoodwinked by children who leave home in uniform only to bunk school and be involved in anti-social activities. He urged teachers to also play their role as interim guardians entrusted by parents during school hours. “They should inform parents on time when children miss out on school.”
Marema also urged the children, most of who are active on social media, to use it positively. “Despite your circumstances and debilitating social malaise in the township, strive to use social media to benefit your education and to link with positive-oriented friends.”
