Pupils taught about careers at an early age
ALEXANDRA - Carter Primary School educates its pupils about the importance of career choices from an early age.
Planning a career from a young age is important and to this end Carter Primary School held a Career Awareness Day.
The event in partnership with Hilton Hotel Sandton was targeted at grade R to 7 pupils. The school’s deputy principal, Hellen Seemela said the objective of the day was to make sure that pupils chose the right subjects for their careers, and to educate pupils about choosing a career based on passion and not money or peer pressure.
“We also want them to know that their character and personality plays a role in their careers,” Seemela said. “We want the pupils to know what they want to do with their future now and not try to pick a career while in matric, especially based on their marks.”
Staff of the hotel informed pupils about the hospitality industry. “We are delighted to help make a small difference in the Alexandra community,” said Heidi Klein Moller, the hotel’s director of operations. “We all have very busy lives, but making a child laugh and having fun with those that are struggling was inspirational for us all.”
Mashadi Kgadi, a Grade 7 pupil said she wanted to be a doctor so she could help the community. “A lot of people are dying, and I want to also save babies and hopefully decrease the rate of stillborn babies,” said Kgadi.
