Load-shedding may be implemented at short notice, but the generation system is stable for now
JOBURG – The power utility said that emergency reserves are at adequate levels currently but customers must continue using electricity sparingly to enable Eskom to curb demand.
Today marks three days since Eskom customers experienced load-shedding and it looks like things will continue on this path for the rest of the week.
Eskom said there had been no load-shedding for the past three days because additional generation units have returned to service overnight. “This further increases generation capacity and helps us to avoid load-shedding. The generation system has held up well since Sunday. Emergency reserves are at adequate levels. It is important, however, for customers to continue using electricity sparingly and help us curb demand.”
The power utility said as generation plants remained unreliable and unpredictable, load-shedding may still be implemented at short notice.
“Unplanned outages or breakdowns were at 10 559MW as at 6.26am this morning while planned maintenance is 4 885MW.”
Eskom urged customers to continue to use electricity sparingly by doing the following:
- Set air-conditioners’ average temperature at 23ºC
- Switch off your geysers over peak periods
- Use the cold water tap rather than using the geyser every time
- Set your swimming pool pump cycle to run twice a day, three hours at a time
- At the end of the day, turn off computers, copiers, printers and fax machines at the switch.
Eskom appealed to customers to revisit their load-shedding schedules on the Eskom or local municipal websites, depending on their electricity supplier, to review amendments.
