Taxi without tracker recovered hours later from suspect in Tembisa

ALEXANDRA – Cops spokesperson warn crime victims after taxi hijacking

A suspect was nabbed in Tembisa while driving a Toyota Avanza that was reported hijacked in Alexandra hours earlier.

Alexandra Police Station spokesperson Constable Simphiwe Mbatha said the incident occurred at about 10.45pm on 3 March. “Two men barged into the home of the victim who is a taxi driver and demanded the vehicle’s keys at gunpoint, ” he added.

“When he told them that they [keys] were with the vehicle owner, they forced him into a car. As they drove to the owner’s place, the victim changed [his] tune and told them that the keys were at his place.”

According to Mbatha, the suspects drove back to the victim’s place where he handed over the keys and one of them drove away in the vehicle which despite having no tracker was found being driven by the suspect hours later.

Mbatha urged victims of such incidents and crime in general not to resist criminals’ demands saying their reactions were unpredictable. “It’s for your own safety to always be vigilant around and when using a vehicle. Keep doors and windows locked and closed even when in a taxi.”
