Sasol offers science, engineering bursaries to women
ALEXANDRA – Sasol bursaries target aspirant female scientists, engineers
Young women of Alex are among those being invited by petrochemical and energy company Sasol to apply for its study bursaries in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) fields.
This was announced in a statement from Sasol which coincided with International Women’s Day on 8 March. Quoting United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the statement said less than 30 percent of the world’s scientific researchers and only 35 percent of students of Stem in higher education are women.
“It’s a startling statistic which means there are incredible opportunities for women to enter the fields at this exciting time, where technology continues to transform the way we live,” said Monica Luwes, manager of Graduate Centre at the company’s Corporate Bursary Services.

A beneficiary of the programme, Lehlogonolo Letshela, a BSc in chemical engineering student at the University of Cape Town lauded the support. “It’s of value to me and my community in the long term,” she said. “I have always loved maths and science, and fortunately teachers encouraged me to pursue these subjects. Young women need great mentors and I hope I can add value to them and the community around me.”
Eligible applicants will be required to study a BSc in various engineering disciplines or in chemistry, geology or metallurgy.
The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation, meals, textbooks. pocket money, allowance for study tools such as laptops, calculators, and financial and career assistance.
