Helen Joseph Hostel in Alexandra gets sanitised

ALEXANDRA – Targetted households received 500ml sanitizers, this included areas in Stjwetla informal settlement and Pan African Mall.

On 1 April, officials of the Gauteng Provincial Government visited Helen Joseph Hostel in Alexandra to roll out a sanitisation operation.

In a released statement, the spokesperson for cooperative governance and traditional affairs, Castro Ngobese said this was part of the ongoing efforts by the government to curb and combat the spread of the coronavirus throughout communities in Gauteng.

The launch was led by MEC for Human Settlements, Urban Planning, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Lebogang Maile and MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Agriculture, Morokane Mosupye.

Ngobese said the Gauteng province-wide sanitisation initiative was about decontamination of public areas, public buildings and direct household sanitisation, primarily targeted at high-density dwelling areas such as townships, hostels, informal settlements as well as places of transit and trade.

Maile and Mosupyoe rolled-out sanitisation stations through the handover of 500ml sanitisers to targeted households. Other areas included Stjwetla informal settlement and Pan African Mall.

“It also seeks to drive waste minimisation through re-use/refill of sanitisation disbursement containers and promote social and physical distancing, making the much-needed sanitisers accessible in local wards and informal settlements,” explained Ngobese.

This will also be implemented in other high-density areas across the province during the lockdown period.
