Bin fight has its day in court

ALEXANDRA - Woman takes her neighbour to court for assault over a dustbin.

Lindelani Zwane wants her neighbour to pay for allegedly assaulting her.

The 26-year-old claims she was sworn at and beaten up after her neighbour accused her of using his rubbish bin. As a result of the alleged assault, Zwane sustained injuries to her finger and is not able to use it properly.

The trouble started after the man accused her of taking his bin. “A young man came to me and said I was using his bin,” she said. “I told him that it was mine and showed him that it has my name on it. He said he made a mistake and he left,” she said.

While she was preparing for work the following day, she said she was approached by another man who accused her of stealing his bin. “There was a confrontation and I showed him that the bin has my name. He then punched me,” she claimed.

She said the man, who lives in the same yard as her, allegedly pushed her so violently that she broke a bone in her finger. “Neighbours had to intervene and stop the fight.” Zwane said the man allegedly threatened to kill her neighbours and cause trouble.

She said she wanted to teach him a lesson by taking him to court. The accused appeared in court on 5 November and pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault and the matter will be heard in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on December 3.
