No cure for crime

ALEXANDRA - Thieves make off with a radio, TV and fax machine from an Alex surgery.

A radio, TV and a fax machine are just some of the few things that were stolen from Dr Abdul Ishmael’s surgery.

The surgery was broken into on the evening of 3 November.

Ishmael, who has worked at the surgery for 37 years, said the break-in does not surprise him at all. “Most of us have been desensitised to crime in South Africa,” he said. “We have all been affected by it. We have to accept it as a part of our lives. We have a high unemployment rate, drug and alcohol abuse so that could be part of the problem.”

Although the crime was being investigated by the police, Ishmael believes that nothing much will change. “We’ve had several break-ins and there was a point where insurance companies didn’t want to insure us because this is a high risk area,” he said.
