Councillor shares tips to manage waste while Norwood depot is temporarily closed

Collections in Saxonwold, Parkwood, Rosebank, Craighall Park, Dunkeld, Parktown North and Parkhurst are affected.

The Norwood Pikitup depot is closed after suspicion of a positive Covid-19 case.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck shared that he didn’t have all the details from Pikitup as this was a recent development.

He added that one of the workers at the depot came into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19 so, as a precaution, the whole depot had to be closed down so staff can be quarantined for 14 days until 1 June.

“This means that there will probably be limited trash collection during this time, and probably into early June as they will need to catch up.

This will affect collections in Saxonwold, Parkwood, Rosebank, Craighall Park, Dunkeld, Parktown North and Parkhurst in the ward,” said Truluck.

He advised residents to try to reduce the trash in their bins in the meantime by:

  • Separating out your trash? Please store it inside your property until further notice.
  • If you have informal recyclers active in your street, put out your recycling so they can sort through it.
  • If the remaining recycling is not collected later on, please bring in your bags.
  • Use garden refuse and leaves as compost and mulch.
  • If you have too much, take it to the Garden Site at Pirates in Victory Road. This site is serviced by the Waterval Depot, so it will not close. It is open during the day, seven days a week.
  • Please don’t take household refuse to the Garden Site at the moment.
  • Don’t dump your extra trash into your neighbour’s bin. Please advise your staff of this too.
  • There are no stock of Pikitup bins, so please look after the ones you have. Don’t leave them out for longer than necessary as they are being stolen.
