Alex mourns Madiba

ALEXANDRA - This historic township was the first destination of Nelson Mandela when he arrived in Johannesburg from Eastern Cape. He lived in a house in 7th Avenue, which has been turned into a national monument.

Alexandra residents have reacted with shock and sadness to the news of the passing of former President Nelson Mandela who was fondly referred to as Tata or Madiba. The former world statesman and international icon passed away on 5 December after a long illness. Alex News reporter Siyathemba Ben spoke to the people of Alexandra and this is what they had to say:

Mhloli Tshazibana (36), “When I heard the news I wasn’t fine. I’m not well at all but I understand that he was in pain for a long time. No one could take his pain away and I just hope that those remaining will continue with what he started.”

Joyce Mbalati (56), “I am heartbroken. I got the news from a friend and I couldn’t sleep afterwards. We have lost a great man and it is because of him that we are here today.”

Samuel Moiloa (60), “I feel very sad. We have lost an icon and our country has lost a legend. He refused to be called an angel when he was alive but today he is an angel.

Washington Maseko (29), “He suffered a lot and fought for many years and today he is free. I just wish that there was someone to replace him. Unfortunately there will never be another Madiba.

Sicebi Radebe (25), “I am saddened and heartbroken. We’ve lost a global leader. He left a legacy of respect and we owe it to ourselves to do better and proceed with the legacy.”
