Jovislash hip-hops for orphans

ALEXANDRA - Musician turns to helping orphans and appeal for his compatriots to follow suit.

Help orphans this festive season is a campaign message from a musician-turned community worker, Jovislash, a hip-hop artist based in Alexandra.

Jovislash, whose real name is Thuso Mamorare, urges his fellow compatriots to assist the Alex Aids Orphans Project in Eastbank by donating clothes, food and toys to the community-based organisation. “As it is almost the festive season, which is commonly known as the time of giving, your support of the orphans and their caregivers will be highly appreciated,” Jovislash said.

Jovislash, who is also a radio production graduate, has produced a public service advertisement that is currently being aired on Alex FM and other community radio stations. The ad encourages the community to lend a hand to the charity.

The Alex Aids Orphans Project is an initiative of the Eastbank Clinic which was set up in 2001 after staff members at the children’s section of the clinic realised an increase of young patients missing appointments and dropping out of treatment was due to the death of their parents. Large numbers of children were losing their parents from Aids-related illnesses and were then under the care of elderly grandparents.

“Those with food, clothes and toys and other items may drop them at 763 Springbok Crescent in Eastbank next to the Eastbank Clinic or contact 011 443 4540.
