Public urged to report suspicious people

BRAMLEY: Police warn of thugs roaming the streets and pretending to be hungry and ask for food only to rob their unsuspecting victims.

Police have warned of thugs roaming the streets, pretending to be hungry and asking for food only to rob their unsuspecting victims.

Bramley police said residents in the Sector 2 policing area which included Bramley, Bramley Park, Kew and Savoy should be on the lookout for two to three suspects who were involved in these criminal acts.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela urged residents to report any suspicious looking people on the streets or beggars as they may be the suspects.

“If you encounter such suspicious people, report them immediately to the Sector 2 vehicle manager. These young men, aged between 18 and 20 years, are robbing people and hijacking cars under the pretext that they are hungry and begging for food. Once you open the window of your car or door to your house, they then threaten you and hijack your car or rob your house,” he said.

Maphakela also urged residents to drive with their car windows closed at all times and never open them to speak to strangers in the streets. The police were patrolling the area and doing all in their power to catch the suspects, but they needed the co-operation of the community to apprehend these thugs, he added.
