Trainees come out from the cold

Ten youths from Alexandra Development Centre (ADC) have completed a course in refrigeration technology

Ten trainees from the Alexandra Development Centre (ADC) have completed a course in refrigeration technology.

The 10-day course is offered by Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Academy (Acra) and is accredited with Merseta.

The ADC is funded by the Department of Social Development to facilitate the course for 20 youths for free, with other courses in cashiering for 20 trainees, and 200 in computer skills. All trainees are drawn from the ADC’s database and must be from Alexandra.

Commending the centre for availing the opportunity to them, Gabisile Mtshali (27) and Lawrence Manamela (31) who are unemployed, said they had gained valuable theoretical and practical skills for repairing fridges and cold rooms.

“I can set fridge temperatures, balance cold rooms, weld damaged components and know all tools of the trade. I now want to register for a learnership, attend trade tests and become a qualified technician,”said Mtshali.

Both trainees are hopeful of getting jobs in hospitals, supermarkets or other big companies.

Centre manager, Lefa Molefe said they had a relationship with several local supermarkets which had placed some of their past trainees in internships.

“Most of them have never disappointed us and are now in permanent positions as technicians.” said Molefe.

The ADC premises was recently burgled and IT assets stolen. Police are still investigating.
