A tale of two birds
Sensational Zingawe Phakathi scored a hat-trick to propel Bluebirds to victory in the team's maiden appearance in the Sasol Women's Football League.
The Alexandra outfit walloped Katlehong Eagles 4-1 in a one-sided match that could have easily been 7-1 had the birds taken all their chances.
The match was played at the Altrek Stadium in the Eastbank section of Alexandra against a team that is in its second season in the Sasol League. The Eagles were completely outclassed by the birds who opened the scoring through a well-taken free kick outside the box by Zingawe.
Fifteen minutes later, Kenewang Moloi made it 2-0 in favour of the birds. The Eagles were not to be outdone as they replied two minutes later after Deini Mbatha scored from a goalmouth scramble.
Zingawe was at it again as she dribbled past two Eagles defenders to slot the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-1.
The birds could have easily gone into the half-time break with the scoreline reading 4-1, had Moloi not missed an easy opportunity.
Fourteen minutes into the second half, Zingawe received a brilliant pass, dummied, turned around two defenders and hit the ball past a hapless keeper for a 4-1 lead. Birds captain Nthabiseng Ramatsokotla led from the front and was instrumental in a lot of the plays.
Eagles coach Obert ‘Robsa’ Lebepe blamed his players for the loss while his counterpart, Malvin Khumalo was delighted with his maiden victory in the Sasol League. Their next game is against UJ Ladies on 12 April at the AW Muller Stadium.
