An unknown man from Setswetla informal settlement in Alexandra owes his life to police officers from the local police station.
They saved him from certain death as he was being stoned by an angry mob of informal settlement residents. They also damaged police vehicles and injured two police officers who had come to rescue the man.
Alex police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the injured officers were taken to Sunninghill Hospital for treatment, but would not disclose which hospital the injured man was taken to.
He said the police had earlier received reports about a mob of about 1 500 residents running amok and stoning an unknown man. Police rushed to the scene and as they tried to rescue the badly injured and bleeding man, they themselves came under attack from the residents who were throwing stones, bricks and bottles at them.
The cost of the damage caused to the vehicles was estimated at R80 000. No motive for the stoning was established and police were still investigating. No arrests have been made.
