The Oscar Trial: Five things you need to know about Day 26
After a lengthy two week break, the Oscar Pistorius trial resumed at the North Gauteng High Court today. Pistorius is on trial for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, who he said he mistook for an intruder.
Here are five things to know so far:
- Pistorius’s defence team called on two witnesses today namely; Johann Stander and his daughter, Carice Viljoen (nee Stander). Both are neighbours of Pistorius at Silver Woods Estate.
- Stander mentioned Pistorius calling him after shooting Steenkamp, saying “Please, please, please come to my house, I shot Reeva, I thought she was a burglar.”
- Stander also contradicted witness for the prosecution, Dr Johan Stipp’s assertion of hearing four shots, then screams, then four more shots. Stander also added that he did not hear screams or shots.
- Carice Viljoen also testified. She said she heard screams and her mother informed her that Pistorius shot Steenkamp, mistaking her for an intruder. Viljoen also described the emotional state that Pistorius was in when holding Steenkamp.
- Defence advocate Barry Roux asked for an adjournment. Court adjourned just before lunch until 9.30am tomorrow.
