Eskom enforces more power cuts

Planned power cuts have hit the country for the second time this winter – and more could be on the way.

Eskom implemented load shedding in parts of the country on 17 June due to its constrained power system and warned that further power cuts were a possibility.

“Due to the severely constrained power system, Eskom started implementing rotational load reduction from 5.12pm this afternoon [17 June],” it said in a statement.

The power giant anticipated that it would be implementing load reduction until 7pm that evening. Eskom called on citizens to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances.

“Should we receive the necessary savings from all our customers and the situation improves, we will terminate load reduction earlier,” it said.

However, on 18 June the power utility said it was still assessing the situation but explained that the power system might experience additional pressure, especially between 5pm and 6pm, which could result in forced power cuts.

Earlier, the power utility said the higher electricity demand during winter due to colder weather conditions put the power grid under pressure.

Municipal customers were urged to contact their municipalities for the correct schedules. However, City Power said it did not have a load-shedding schedule and had requested one from Eskom.

Eskom customers could access the utility’s load schedule by clicking here or contact its customer call centre on 0860 037 566.
