A Setswetla man poured paraffin over his 14-year-old niece and set her alight and later ordered her to lie about the incident when he took her for treatment.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the uncle has since been arrested and appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted murder.
The niece said her uncle had summoned her to his bedroom to inquire about her missing cellphone which she claimed she lost. “When we could not come to a common understanding on the missing cellphone, my uncle grabbed a paraffin container, poured the paraffin all over my body and set me alight,” she said.
She said she managed to run away and went straight to her uncle’s wife and begged her to rush her to the clinic for treatment. The wife allegedly declined and offered no reason why she would not take her for treatment. The niece had sustained serious burns all over her body.
Her uncle then offered to take her for treatment, allegedly on one condition – she had to lie to the clinic and tell them she burnt herself.
Cornered by the nurses who were alarmed at the level of the burns, she decided to spill the beans. The nurses then called the police and a case was opened and the uncle arrested.
