One armed robber arrested, two flee
ALEXANDRA - Quick reaction by Alexandra police led to the arrest of one of three suspected armed robbers in 2nd Avenue.
The suspects had just robbed a 23-year-old woman of her handbag containing two cellphones, R100 in cash and other smaller items. The woman said she had just alighted from a taxi when she was approached by three men.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the three suspects then pointed a firearm at the woman and demanded she hand over her handbag.
One of the suspects is said to have bodily searched the woman for money. When they could not find it on her person, the three suspects then fled the scene. As they fled, a taxi arrived and the woman informed the driver who, together with the woman flagged down a patrolling police car and reported the matter.
Police quickly gave chase and arrested one suspect, still carrying handbag. Maphakela said police were on the trail of the other suspects, while the arrested one has since appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates Court on a charge of armed robbery.
