Nigerians show their softer side

ALEXANDRA - Although Nigerians may be considered tough nuts to crack as many of them are hefty bouncers in private clubs, they still they have a kinder and softer side.

Although Nigerians may be considered tough nuts to crack as many of them are hefty bouncers in private clubs, they still have a softer side.

A group of Nigerians living in Orange Grove visited Alexandra and displayed their humanitarian side by donating hampers of food, toiletries and blankets for the orphaned children at the Banakekeleni Orphanage Home in Marlboro in Greater Alexandra.

The items were donated under the auspices of the Nigerian Community of Orange Grove, which is non-profit organisation made up of “humble and noble Nigerians who in their own little way come together twice every month, at St Augustine’s Anglican Church in Orange Grove to discuss the way forward and put things together to make sure that they are able to achieve their humanitarian objectives”, said the president of the organisation, Solomon Owa.

“In our own little way, we visited the Bnakekeleni Orphanage Home with gifts such as groceries, toiletries, clothes and blankets to help the under-privileged children who find refuge there, ” Owa said.

Owa said they always encourage everyone who is more privileged to take a leaf out of their book and do the honourable thing and give something back to those who are less privileged. Founder of the home, Rose Kubayi, was so delighted that fellow Africans from far afield in Nigeria though here, had seen it fit to give something to these children, whose parents and relatives have perished as a result of the HIV/Aids pandemic.

“You came in at the right time as we were struggling to make ends and we were wondering what we were going to do and what to give these children during the Christmas time. Now we can sleep in peace knowing that the children have been catered for,” Kubayi said. “This an answer to our many silent prayers that each and everyone of us in this home were having.”
