Youth urged to bolster fight against crime

ALEXANDRA - Police are calling on the community youth to bolster their fight against crime by joining their youth desk.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said Alex police urgently need members of the youth aged between 14 and 35 to join their youth desk, which has experienced establishment problems as there is a lack of committed volunteers.

The desk was formed in the early 2000s, but has never been fully functional and with the rising crime in the area mainly believed to be perpetrated by the youth, including the rise in the use of harmful substances such as nyaope, Maphakela said the police had seen it fit to try and revive the youth desk.

“We would like the youth to come and join us in the fight against crime. Crime is not just an issue for the police to curb, but is a societal problem that needs all of us, young and old, to rise up and take a stand against the scourge,” Maphakela said.
