More schools to ease crowding, improve passes
ALEXANDRA - The drop in the 2014 matric results at Alex schools has been partly attributed to overcrowded classes.
Social activist and commentator Thabo Mopasi said with a population of 750 000, Alex needed 10 more primary and secondary schools to ensure acceptable pupil-teacher ratios.
“Currently, there are five secondary and 13 primary schools,” he said. Mopasi suggested that principals of Alex schools could also help out with teaching duties. “Although they play important managerial roles, their experience is needed in the classroom,” said Mopasi.
He cited the example of Realogile Secondary a few years ago when the principal of the school was actively teaching. This period saw the school produce the best matric results in the area.
