Children to learn the law

ALEXANDRA - Law firm ENSAfrica will this year expand its services to include more school children benefiting from its constitutional law education programme.

Law firm ENSAfrica will expand its services this year to include more schoolchildren who will benefit from its constitutional law education programme.

The firm provided pro bono [free] services to residents to enable them to know their rights, improve their circumstances and guard against exploitation and abuse.

Last year, its legal practitioner Ngwako Raboshakga said the constitutional literacy programme benefited Realogile, Alex High and Minerva pupils and will be expanded to include KwaBhekilanga and Eastbank high schools. “This is to expose the pupils from a young age to the highest law of the land and to develop their awareness of the rule of law so that they can respect their own and others’ rights, thus enabling the development of a more civil and democratic society.”

He said the 10-session programme, running from March to September, will encourage the pupils to contribute to building social cohesion, co-existence in the home and community, encourage them to contribute voluntarily to social causes and in the process, add to nation building.”We all are affected by law daily and its important to help children understand it from a young age so that they too can articulate, apply and help others use it to advance their own rights, improve their human dignity, hold those in power accountable and expand the boundaries of freedom.” He added that while the course was not certified or accredited, it contributed to life orientation in the school curriculum.

Raboshakga added that the sessions will be conducted through presentations, mock court sessions and coaching in partnership with law students from WITS and the University of Johannesburg. They will be conducted after school.

The firm will continue to provide courses for residents on business and other legal issues and also handles individuals cases like housing, and matrimonial and labour matters.
