Police and Metro police cordoned off busy Florence Maphosho Avenue to investigate a case of a suspected hijacking of a white BMW 1 series on 16 January.
Many police, who boxed off the suspected stolen vehicle with their vehicles, were joined at the spectacle by bemused onlookers.
Speaking anonymously in the absence of a spokesperson, some of the police said the vehicle seemed to have a tracker, and police were closing in on the suspects when they abandoned it between 4th and 5th avenues. Others said a police chopper was involved in the chase which began elsewhere. The police chopper lead to the suspects abandoning the vehicle.
None of the onlookers saw anyone getting out of the car and the police could not shed any light on the matter, except to say they were investigating the case. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the vehicle had been hijacked in Sandringham and was suspected to have been used as a getaway by suspects involved in some criminal activity.
