CJC students in court on public disorder charges

ALEXANDRA - Seventy six students of the Alex campus of the Central Johannesburg College were yesterday arrested for public disorder and will appear at the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court tomorrow [Thursday].

Seventy six students of the Alex campus of the Central Johannesburg College were arrested for public disorder and will appear at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on 29 January.

They were arrested at the campus’ entrance after locking the gates following their submission of a memorandum of grievances to college management. These include allegations of financial and institutional mismanagement The students’ lawyer Dumisani Setati said the number arrested included four ANC Youth League members who joined them in solidarity. Police fired teargas to disperse the students before bungling them into police vans and taking them to Norwood Police Station.

Setati said the case had no merit and will most probably be dropped as the students were peacefully voicing their dissatisfaction with an institution failing to perform its duty of providing them quality with education and training. “The matter should have been handled in a better way as they have legitimate concerns which the college should respond to,” he said.

Susan Banda, Student Representative Council member said they were released after six hours at the police station.
