A case of public violence involving students from the Alex campus of the Central Johannesburg College was withdrawn from the roll at the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court on 30 January.
The case involved 76 Hair Care and Cosmetology students and ANC Youth League members who were arrested on 28 January at the campus. This after they were dispersed with teargas by the police while peacefully demonstrating after handing in a list of grievances to the college’s management.
Their lawyer Dumisani Setati said the case was withdrawn by the control prosecutor due to a lack of evidence. “We are investigating the matter to determine the reason for our clients’ arrest and will report back to them for any instruction,” he said.
Students Representative Council member Susan Banda said they now awaited on college management to respond to their grievances on 4 February.
