Youngster focuses on his dream

ALEXANDRA - Social and economic hardships have not stopped a teenager from pursuing his dream in the entertainment world.

Social and economic hardships have not stopped a teenager from pursuing his dream in the entertainment world.

Brought up by a now late mom and with a disabled dad in Limpopo, Thabo Kgosiethata, 21, lives alone in Alex and survives with assistance from neighbours, friends and charity organisation Alexandra Child Care and Support Centre at Realogile Secondary School. Despite adversity. he passed matric and has set his sights on a career in acting, drama and film. “I have been into this field since childhood and it has kept me busy, away from the streets and helped me link with other positive-minded youths and mentors who have urged me on after they observed my interest, passion and commitment,” he said.

“There is nothing to gain on the streets except bad influences which lead to crime. Rather, youth should spend their time productively, getting guidance and advice which will help them develop careers to depend on in future.”

His determination has led to work at Olivetree Theatre where, as a volunteer general hand, he learns the ropes of the trade by assisting the production team set up the stage for actors and poets, and in the process, learns from their rehearsals. In between, he also attends drama, dance and filmmaking classes. “This keeps me busy, focused and determined to succeed in this competitive field,” he stressed.

Olivetree Theatre production manager, Michael Sithe, said Kgosiethata’s commitment to both work and his career was rare among the youth. “He enjoys every moment at work, rehearses his drama lines whenever he gets time and has developed a routine of asking for help wherever necessary.”

Drama teacher, Samson Mlambo said Kgosiethata has the characteristics he needs for success in the arts sector, starting with his determination and commitment.

“He is confident, open, listens to advice, implements what he is taught and pushes himself hard. He needs to work more on his voice to strengthen his potential to be one of the best actors around.”

Mlambo urged Khosiethata and other youth with defined aspirations to be role models for others, especially those with difficult circumstances, to help them avoid crime.
