ANCYL leads health walk on Human Rights Day
ALEXANDRA - Alexandrians played their part in getting the nation healthy on Human Rights Day.
Residents of Alexandra played their part in getting the nation healthy on Human Rights Day.
The township hosted an 8km walk facilitated by the African National Congress Youth League which started and ended at the Three Square Sports grounds. The event also highlighted a mayoral programme which promotes healthy living by encouraging residents to adopt regular exercise and cycling as fashionable lifestyles.
The organiser, Kgoerano Kekana said many people participated in the event which created an opportunity, especially for the youth, to foster unity by participating in an event that would prolong life as well as celebrate a date set aside to remind us of those who perished while fighting to secure human rights for us all.
He said the event would hopefully inspire them to keep them away from destructive behaviour like the use of drugs and alcohol, teenage sex with unwanted pregnancies and dropping out of school. “The combination of promoting a healthy lifestyle and the celebration of rights should also remind them of history, which shouldn’t be forgotten, while encouraging… unity which derived from the struggles of all citizens,” said Kekana.
Councillor Julia Moloi lauded the event for raising awareness on an important public holiday which promoted nation building and rights, especially among the youth who have a longer future ahead.
“Health is a concern which should always be prioritised for the future survival of, especially, children and should be promoted through change of attitude towards regular exercise,” she said.
Moloi urged residents to alter their diet by eating less meat and more vegetables, which are cheaper.
“They should use their backyard spaces for veggie gardens to lessen reliance on shops, and get some exercise in the process. [It will] also [supplement] their meagre income.
