The Alex Community Police forum is to establish block committees to involve residents in the fight against crime.
The forum’s chairperson Bulldog Rathokolo said the idea for block committees was formed by past experiences when communities established street committees as part of the fight against apartheid.
“Their [block communities] agenda will be solely to promote community safety through the participation of all households and within the law, in partnership with the police under the rule and regulations governing the operations of policing forums,” said Rathokolo.
The block committees will be made up of yard committees comprising eight members to ensure the involvement of all households in combating crime. The committees will be non-political.
Rathokolo urged all residents to attend the meetings which will elect these committees.
The process of forming block communities will involve:
- Electing four members to committees along all avenues and streets in Alexandra, Eastbank, Tsutsumani, Riverpark and other extensions by the end of April.
- Launching sub-policing forums by the end of May.
- Electing police forums per police station by end June.
- Electing the Alex Police Forum Cluster members by end July. The cluster comprises Alex, Bramley, Sandton, Midrand and Sandringham police stations.
- Electing the Provincial Community Police Forum by end of September.
