No 1 Square Ground to get R8.5 million revamp
ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association has secured a lease agreement and sponsorship to revamp No 1 Sports Ground on 3rd Avenue.
The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association has secured a lease agreement and sponsorship to revamp No 1 Square Ground on 3rd Avenue, according to Maisha Molepo, chairperson of the association.
This after Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart said in the article, Please fix No 1, in Alex News week ending 20 March, that he had submitted a petition to council to improve the stadium and its security. Stewart said the ground had become dilapidated, with vandals taking over and making it dangerous for residents to pass next to it at night.
Molepo said the association had secured the lease from the Joburg Property Company to run the complex, and sponsorship of R8.5 million from Total Sport to install artificial turf, upgrade the changing rooms and offices, install lighting and fix the seats.
While excited about the development, Molepo expressed concern that the lease excluded an adjacent space which they had hoped to use for parking and to develop as a training and practice space. He said initially, the space had been said to be for housing, but had now changed to a possible site for market, and was no longer available.
Despite this setback, Molepo said they were happy that the revamp would increase the number of sports facilities for the burgeoning number of teams that require good and well maintained facilities for matches in Alex.

The revamping work is expected to start soon after an announcement of the grant to stakeholders and plans have been finalised. Molepo meanwhile asked the councillor to assist get the vagrants off the site in readiness for the work.
