The Mayor Parks Tau will host a special celebratory event on 15 April for senior citizens over the age of 100 years at the Walter Sisulu Community Hall in Randburg.
More than 800 elderly people will attend and enjoy a special lunch, listen to entertainment and receive gifts to celebrate their special milestone.
Nonceba Molwele, MMC for Health and Social Development, said the event will honour their contributions to the growth of the City they were born in when it was only a mid-sized mining town and now, Africa’s largest commercial and global city.
The event will also be a recognition of contributions of national stalwarts former President Nelson Mandela who started his legal career and political activism in the City where he stayed after retirement and also his struggle comrade, Walter Sisulu who was honoured with the Freedom of the City.
The head of social development, Wandile Zwane, said the event will demonstrate the caring reputation of the City to the elderly. The department will also provide information on the services they offered to the elderly like wellness programmes, advice on healthy lifestyles, and awareness on social grants, human rights issues and social activities and hobbies.
Zwane said the department also manages old age homes, retirement villages and advises welfare organisations providing special services such as home-based care.
The event will start at 11am.
