Local bodybuilders bring home trophies

ALEXANDRA - Despite old and rickety equipment, an Alex gym’s body building contestants scooped accolades at a recent annual Steve Biko Body Building Development Show in Klipfontein.

Despite old and rickety equipment, Alex gym’s bodybuilding contestants scooped accolades at a recent annual Steve Biko Bodybuilding Development Show in Klipfontein.

Three contestants from the Vungazi Alex Gym on 4th Avenue continued its legacy of previous victories, this time by winning in the junior, 80kg and 90kg categories at the provincial competition started in 2011 for township gyms.

Ecstatic gym founder and former bodybuilder, Vungazi Mdlalose said previous victories included a female when Tina Ndaba won the Miss Figure competition.

The Klipfontein winners are from a stable of 1 633 youthful members who use the gym daily, including weekends.

Mdlalose, who started the gym in 1996, singled out Cain Baloyi for his overall victory which landed the gym a floating trophy. He said Baloyi’s success was an indication of the youth buying into his contribution to keeping children off the street and from crime.

“The gym also gives them work opportunities as physical trainers, bouncers and occasional security guards at stadiums and social events, the exercises tone and develop their bodies, and teach them discipline and life skills.”

Mdlalose said the Klipfontein victories were also a testimony that anything is possible if one sets a goal and commits to achieving it, despite social and economic challenges.

He stressed that more champions would emerge from the gym if it had new equipment to replace the old. He asked for sponsorship to enable the contestants yo enter more competitions locally and abroad. This he said in reference to a failed trip to Las Vegas last year by five of his charges due to a lack of sponsorship for entry fees, transport and accommodation.
