League conveys its condolences over Chiefs fan death
JOBURG - The Premier Soccer League CEO Brand de Villiers has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the family of soccer fan Ntandazo Mbenje.
Mbenje tragically lost his life at the Absa Premiership match between Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs on 9 May at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium during the fans’ pitch invasion after Chiefs won the match.
His death is still a subject of a police investigation. Reports suggest that Mbenje attempted to grab a police officer’s service pistol and a scuffle ensued which resulted in a shot ringing off, fatally wounding him.
“We are all saddened by Ntandazo Mbenje’s passing,” said De Villiers.
“On behalf of the league and our members, we would like to convey our deepest condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this during this difficult time. As a football family, we mourn Ntandazo’s death.”
De Villiers said the league would like to afford the police the time to complete their investigation. “It is important that we establish all the facts on what transpired on Saturday [9 May]. As the league, we will give the police all the necessary and required assistance.”
