Wynberg’s facelift takes shape

WYNBERG - The drab-looking industrial area is receiving a facelift with landscaping and beautification.

Despite the proximity to Sandton, Wynberg, like Alex, has experienced years of neglect.

The upgrade and beautification of the landscape are part of the City’s Corridors of Freedom programme which seeks to integrate and revive marginalised and neglected areas into the mainstream economy and transportation networks.

The programme includes the development of the Rea Vaya transport system and dedicated cycle lanes which are expected to inject a new look and also extend the area into Alex.

The Wynberg upgrades includes the construction of a bus lane and bus stop to encourage the use of public transport, lighting up the area to enhance visibility and improve security, and the expansion of the Grayston Drive bridge over the M1 freeway to include a dedicated cycle and pedestrian route linking Wynberg and Alex with Sandton.

It’s hoped this will also promote walking and cycling as alternative means of transport with health benefits to commuters – if the City can succeed in changing the public’s fixation with private motor transport.

Other developments are newly-paved and protected pathways alongside roads and the planting of shrubs to promote a green environment.

Will this development will inspire Wynberg industries to improve their buildings? Share your views with Alex News by leaving a comment below.
