Children of Zenzeleni Primary School have vowed to exercise their rights and report any form of abuse in their family or community.
They made the vow during a visit to the school by independent statutory body Legal Aid South Africa during National Child Protection Week which is commemorated annually in South Africa to raise awareness of the rights of children.

Legal Aid visited the school in Alexandra where they educated children about their rights. The children pledged to exercise their rights in a responsible way and to respect the rights of others.
The children showed their commitment to the pledge by painting their hands with different colours and imprinting them on a pledge poster.
Lerato Phume of Legal Aid said, “We chose Zenzeleni because of its large number of pupils, and we thought the children would be able to carry the message home and also spread it within the community.”
Lerato added that they would return to the school after the exams for further educational interaction with the children.

According to the Department of Social Development, children in South Africa live in a society with a Constitution that has the highest regard for their rights, and for the equality and dignity of everyone.
Legal Aid assisted more than 16 858 children during the previous financial year, with each child being individually tracked to ensure their cases received attention.
