Man buys stolen car, receives suspended sentence
ALEXANDRA - A man in his thirties escaped jail time when he received an eight year sentence wholly suspended for five years for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
A man in his 30s recently escaped jail time when he received an eight-year sentence wholly suspended for five years for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court meted out the sentence on 18 August to Itumeleng Mosana who pleaded guilty to the possession of a Mercedes Benz C350 which was reported stolen in a house robbery in Benoni on 26 April.
The court heard that on 11 May, Mosasa and two other men in the Mercedes were stopped by Sandton police. Mosana was driving the vehicle. After allegedly skipping a red traffic light in Sandton, they were followed by police, who then stopped and searched the men but found nothing untoward.
The police are said to have checked the vehicle’s ownership and found it to have been reported as stolen during a house robbery. Mosana claimed to have bought the car, which was worth about R300 000, for R50 000 from someone who he was unable to bring to court to prove the sale.
Mosasa was detained and later released on bail until the court hearing. His two friends were not arrested. The vehicle has been returned to its owner, the victim of the house robbery.
Meanwhile, the alleged perpetrators of the house and vehicle robbery are said to have been arrested and are awaiting sentencing by the Benoni Magistrates’ Court.
