Melodious tunes punctuated prayer sessions at the Women for Peace Centre on 8th Avenue during the first conference of the Glorious Youth Movement.
The movement, formed last year by Christian youth from different denominations, is on a mission to rescue other youths through Christian ministry.
The movement’s Phathu Masindi said their aim was to assist others by introducing and strengthening their Christian conviction as a platform to help them with their struggles and hardships.
He said they targeted youth in the 18- to 27-year age group. “We are a platform to develop and later dispatch them as God’s messengers to help others change their negative circumstances and to introduce them to other opportunities to change their lives for the better,” said Masindi.
He added that they aimed to grow and extend the movement’s reach to other areas, starting with Gauteng townships and spreading to other provinces. This would be through praise and worship programmes which would equip youths with the skills needed to conduct open-air worship and all-night prayer sessions.
Masindi said their biblical objective was transparent and involved occasional input from pastors from all denominations, ministering on topics of their choice.
Boston College has also thrown its weight behind the religious movement. Themba Dube and Freedom Ncube of Boston College said the institution availed itself to any requests relating to the upliftment of youths.
“We will contribute financial independence to some of the movement’s members through a R20 000 bursary to one of them and R1 500 bursaries to several others,” Dube said.
