This according to Colonel Johannes Tau, head of visible policing for the Alexandra Cluster of Police Stations which includes Alex, Bramley, Midrand, Sandton and Sandringham.
Reporting to the elective meeting of the Alex Community Policing Forum, Tau said a week hardly went by without an incident of murder, rape, housebreaking, common assault, assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
“These crimes are giving us sleepless nights in Alexandra. Although we managed to decrease the number of these crimes in August, the levels are still unacceptably high,” Tau said.
He said they were doing their level best with the resources at their disposal to bring the numbers down. “Our biggest challenges which come in as complaints from the community were the response times of the police. We still have to look into that, including the drugs and liquor challenges. Most of the crimes in Alex are caused by drugs and alcohol and we need to restrict the opening and closing times for liquor outlets.”
Tau urged the community of Alexandra to continue to work hand-in-hand with the police in the fight against the scourge.
“As the police we rely so much on community tips about crime being planned, crimes to be committed, and those being committed.”
