All-African chefs to cook up a storm
JOBURG - The Culinary Arts Association of South Africa (Caasa) and Technopro Trading Enterprise will host the Haapi festival (Hospitality All African People’s Imbizo) at the German School DSJ, Milpark, from 23 to 27 September.
The event aims to create social cohesion and get African chefs working together, as well as to discuss the issue of trading and food security. Chefs from 21 countries are expected to attend, including Ghana, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Nigeria, Egypt and Morocco.
Midrand-based chef, Citrum Khumalo, president of the Culinary Arts Association of South Africa, said the festival will feature culinary competitions, food stall demonstrations of African cuisine, and entertaining activities for the communities which will have the opportunity to watch the skills of local and international chefs. Competitions will include a BBQ challenge and the Nelson Mandela culinary challenge.
Khumalo added, “The festival will highlight the importance of growing foods organically by small-scale farmer communities and the creation of local food markets affordable to all, as well as promoting indigenous food and drinks.”
