Alex clinic CEO departs a happy man

ALEXANDRA - After six years at the head of the Alex Clinic, outgoing chief executive officer Labane Maluleke leaves the institution a contented man.

After six years as the head of Alex Clinic, outgoing CEO, Labane Maluleke, leaves the institution a contented man.

The clinic, an NPO and referral facility for four local council clinics, was taken over by the provincial department of health in July. Maluleke said he felt strongly that he had played his part, and it was time for the new administrators to implement its plans from a firm base that he and his staff have left.

“When I took over the clinic had many reputational challenges, internal instability, low staff morale and mistrust of governance,” he said. “This required strategic changes in management to turn these challenges around and had to involve annual strategic planning, retraining of management, board members adhering to planned meetings and being acquainted with their fiduciary duty.”

He added that they had had to strengthen board committees and establish an audit committee to liaise with the external audit service provider.

“This enabled the clinic to have a clean audit record from then till now, and to develop trust which helped us to attract and re-attract major funders who complement the partial government grant and supported infrastructural development projects for the facility.”

He credited the staff for recommitting to service excellence in adherence to the batho pele principles (selfless service to the public). “This by being accountable to their roles, and management’s transparency when engaging with the public through an open line and the media. Also through a reduction of long queues waiting for services.”

He added that regardless of this firm foundation, the team he leaves would continue to strive to improve the quality of service delivery. “I hope government’s takeover will further strengthen the positives in the operational systems we leave in place, will continue to strengthen and enhance community participation in the health centre and will retain the valuable contributions of partners.”

Maluleke who holds a Masters in Business Administration is pursuing further studies and hopes his future plans will keep him close to serving the public again.
