Father bust for allowing child to drink

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Magistrate Court remanded a man in custody for letting his under age child drink alcohol.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court remanded a man in custody for allowing his underage child to consume alcohol.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the case, which was heard in court on 17 September, was postponed to enable further investigation into the matter, including the whereabouts of the child’s mother. The child has been taken to a place of safety.

Maphakela said the incident was reported to police on 8 September by commuters travelling in a local taxi. They allegedly smelt alcohol on the child, said to be under the age of 10, who was with his father. When the commuters asked the child who gave him the alcohol, he allegedly pointed to his father. When they asked the father why he had allowed the child to consume alcohol, he allegedly seemed unperturbed and told them that alcohol would help the child grow into a man.

The commuters are said to have asked the taxi to stop and called the police who came and arrested the man and took the child to social workers.

Maphekela urged residents who knew of cases of child abuse or underage drinking to report the matter to the police or a social worker. Alternatively, they should report it to Alexandra Police Station commander Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi on 082 319 9429.
