A suspected robber is in police custody awaiting trial after his victims apprehended him and handed him over to the police.
Alex police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the man, who was arrested on 29 September, was allegedly part of a gang of four which reportedly accosted four other men at gunpoint on the corner of 17th and Joe Nhlanhla avenues.
Maphakela said the victims were sitting on the pavement at about 12.30pm when the gang approached them. One gang member allegedly pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot them. The three other gang members are said to have searched the victims and allegedly took three cellphones, all worth about R1 900, as well as R2 000 in cash, before running away.
The victims gave chase and managed to catch the accused before taking him to the police. He was searched and a knife was found on him.
His three accomplices are still at large.
