Victims of shack fire receive support

ALEXANDRA - Female and child victims of the 13 November shack fires on Alfred Nzo and 14th Avenues received temporary relief over the weekend from an NPO, councillor and Midrand based businesses.

Women and child victims of the shack fires which occurred on 13 November on Alfred Nzo and 14th avenues in Alexandra, received temporary relief from a non-profit organisation, a councillor and Midrand-based businesses.

The fire razed 25 shacks to the ground, burning all the contents of their homes, including money and important items such as Identity Documents and birth certificates.

The fire was eventually put out through a collaborative effort by community members using buckets and Emergency Management Services’ fire trucks.

Through the efforts of DA Councillor Shadrack Mkhonto and non-profit organisation Leratong Joy for One, the women and children were provided with shelter over the weekend at the non-profit organisation’s residence on 12th Avenue. Local businesses donated food hampers that will last two weeks to the victims as well.

Mkhonto said the donations to the victims also included building materials to help them reconstruct their shacks.
