Community assists in thief’s arrest
ALEXANDRA - A 20 year old Alex man has been detained in custody pending sentencing by the Alexandra Magistrates' Court for house robbery and theft.
An Alex man recently pleaded guilty to house robbery and theft and was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.
The court heard that on 17 September, 20-year-old Mbongeni Zondo of 17th Avenue, Alex, broke into an Alex resident’s room using a hammer and stole several household items comprising clothes, a microwave, an electric iron, speakers and DVDs which he loaded into a wheeled black dustbin.
The incident happened after the resident, Thokozani Nyoni, had locked his room at 7.45am to go to work. At 10.45am, Nyoni received a call from a friend informing him that the public had apprehended Zondo as he was pushing away the loaded dustbin.
Alex police were called to the scene and arrested Zondo. The stolen items were returned to the owner.
